As of January 1, Péter Barta will continue his career with the firm as a partner. In his new role, Péter will lead the firm’s tax litigation and white-collar crime team while continuing to actively manage tax advisory matters related to indirect taxes.

This year, our firm celebrated its 20th anniversary. We started in 2005 as a one-sole practitioner office, and today nearly sixty of us work together as a leading player in the Hungarian legal market. Practice areas that once consisted of individual practices have grown into independent teams, and our clients now include multinational corporations, Hungarian mid-sized companies, and family-owned businesses alike. Our work extends beyond the Hungarian market to the international arena, with cross-border matters and collaborations becoming an integral part of our daily operations.

We are proud that our firm has been awarded the Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year title this year by the Hungarian Bar Association. This recognition is particularly meaningful to us, as supporting socially significant cases has been a central part of our practice for many years. The award primarily acknowledges our collaboration with the Hintalovon Child Rights Foundation, as well as our broader pro bono activities, in which our colleagues participate with great dedication and professional responsibility.

Celebrating our 20th anniversary, we conducted a comprehensive survey asking over 200 of our clients to evaluate us. The questions explored a variety of topics, including how well our partners understand our activities, in which areas they see potential for closer collaboration, how they rate our joint work, and how they would describe us in a single word.

In August, we relaunched our competition law practice. Led by Eszter Fodor, who brings nearly 15 years of experience gained at a multinational retail chain and an international law firm, with extensive expertise in both competition and consumer protection law. Eszter’s perspective is further enriched by her professional background at the Hungarian Competition Authority, where she worked for almost a year and a half, first as an investigator and later as a head of department.

Jalsovszky and KNP LAW, two of Hungary’s premier law firms, will continue their operations jointly under the Jalsovszky name.

Starting in April, a dedicated legal technology team will support our lawyers' work.

In recent weeks, we have been proud sponsoring partners of two outstanding international professional events.

As of February 1, our real estate practice is led by Éva Kovács, a highly experienced and well-reputed property lawyer. Éva joins us with over 20 years of professional experience, having worked at international law firms in Budapest and New York, bringing extensive expertise in real estate law, M&A, and commercial law.

We have, for long, wished to show our daily life to the public, what happens to us beyond legal tasks, how we work together as a team. A video that is not about our professional results but about us.

Early November, we moved into our beautifully renovated, state-of-the-art, new office space on the 4th floor — essentially doubling the office area we previously occupied. 

From September 2024, we are expanding our firm's services with three new practice areas.

Oliver Koppany will be joining our firm as Foreign Legal Counsel from September, focusing on US-Hungarian business connections. 

The American Chamber of Commerce Foundation celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the winners of Diversity Impact Awards were honoured at a grand gala ceremony. We are very honoured that our collaboration with the Hintalovon Foundation won a special prize this year. Our colleague Péter Szilas, who is also the project's visionary, received the award in the presence of more than 400 guests, including members, partners, government leaders and representatives from the US Embassy in Budapest, at the event on Friday evening.

Last September we launched our unique training programme with 25 enthusiastic law students. The explicit aim of the programme is to provide practical legal knowledge to the students as complement the theory they learn at university.  

This spring, The Legal500 published its Green Guide edition for the second time in Europe, aiming to highlight law firms that contribute to environmental sustainability through their working conditions and business practices. We are honoured to be one of the five law firms from Hungary to be included in this prestigious ranking.

For many years, our office has given priority to supporting socially important causes. To summarise our activity in this field, we are publishing for the first time our annual CSR report, which gives an insight into our commitments.

After 4 years of experience in Big4 tax advisory firms and a 9-year career at Jalsovszky, Ákos Baráti will continue to lead our tax advisory group as a partner from January. The group's classic focus on income tax planning and international tax advisory has been complemented in recent years by a solid wealth planning focus, which Ákos has played a lion's share in developing. 

Jalsovszky, Concorde MB Partners, Vállalatépítés.hu and Dutcham organised their traditional autumn firm value conference again this year.

The first half of the first season of Jalsovszky Academy has started. The programme has been extremely popular and well received, we had to select 25 students from 83 applicants to start the course with us. On the very first day, the students were immersed in a very exciting topic: how an M&A transaction goes from term sheet to closing.

Starting in September, we are launching a two-semester, practice-oriented course that supplements theoretical knowledge for university law students under the name Jalsovszky Academy.

Ádám Boross will lead our banking and finance group from August. Ádám, who joins us from Deloitte Legal, has more than 10 years of experience in international law firms. Having worked at Baker & McKenzie, Bird & Bird, Weil, Gotshal & Manges and Deloitte Legal, he has represented clients in complex and, in a significant number of cases, cross-border financing transactions, as well as advised on financial regulatory and compliance matters.

At Jalsovszky, in addition to the daily drive, we are increasingly focusing on supporting socially important causes. As part of this, we have entered into a multi-year agreement to support Hintalovon Child Rights Foundation. Under the agreement, in addition to providing financial support, we will assist the foundation with various legal issues and occasionally get involved in their daily work.

We are honoured that Chambers and Partners, one of the world's most reputable international publications, has once again ranked our Tax practice as a market leader (Tier 1). We are also pleased to have been included in Chambers' list of recommended law firms for our other two key practice areas, M&A and Banking & Finance. 

From April, we will be activating a program called Henchman, which can search existing documents in a matter of seconds – arrange, and if necessary, dust off precedents that may have arisen in a contract from years ago. The new program perfectly complements our contract automation process based on Legito’s system and will not only increase the efficiency of our legal work, but will also make the process of writing contracts more enjoyable.

We are pleased to announce that Ágnes Bejó will continue her career as partner of our firm. 

​Our tax advisory team, recognised as market leader by all international publications, is further strengthened by the arrival of 2 new attorneys: Zsóka Erdősy and Péter Hosszú.

Many people build companies, fortunes and mini-empires through long years of hard work and sacrifice, but few give much thought, at least not in time, as to how to protect that wealth and secure it for future generations.

We are delighted to have been awarded the title of “Tax Litigation Advisor of the Year in Hungary” at the International Tax Review’s 2022 London Awards Gala, beating the international and better-known players in the industry.

From September Péter Szilas strengthens Jalsovszky's litigation and commercial law team as a senior attorney. His 10 years of experience in an international law firm environment and his 8 years of work at the Ministry of Justice on the drafting of the new Civil Code of Hungary have made him an excellent professional who can put his in-depth theoretical knowledge into practice.

Together with Arsboni, we held our online Summer Academy for future lawyers during June and July. Our goal was to bring the everyday life of lawyers closer to law students.

In cases involving bad debts, taxpayers have fought several battles in national and EU courts to recover the VAT on unpaid customer receivables from the tax authority. Now another – probably the last – chapter of this multi-round battle has come to an end.

As our staff had gradually increased over the past few years, we outgrew our office space on floor 5 and opened a new office on another floor at the beginning of the year. Our newly designed offices on floor 6 were occupied by our litigation team, who have quickly settled in there.

The Budapest Bar Association’s most coveted award for young lawyers is the Judith Nagy Award, which honours the memory of a deceased lawyer. Female colleagues are eligible for the award if they pass their bar exam summa cum laude.

International Tax Review (ITR) is one of the top magazines in its field, and each year it ranks and evaluates tax advisors and tax lawyers around the world. This year, ITR ranked more than 850 companies in 84 countries based on the opinions of 13,000 customers and 2,700 professionals.

Our firm represented the Doktor24 Group in the largest transaction in the history of the Hungarian private healthcare market.

We are proud to announce that the International Lawyers Network (ILN) – the network of independent law firms that Jalsovszky is a full title member of – was elected as the Global Law Firm Network of the Year by The Lawyer magazine during their European Awards 2021 virtual ceremony.

The topic of our sold-out conference at the end of October was family wealth planning and asset management, where Dr. Anna Ránky, senior advisor and lawyer at Klart Family Business Advising, Dr. Ákos Baráti, senior lawyer at Jalsovszky Law Office, and Péter Soós, private banker at Hold Fund Management Zrt., all gave presentations.

We were happy to announce that our firm got shortlisted for the 2021-year Tax Award in the company of Big4 auditing firms. 

We recently expanded our market-leading tax team by the arrival of Gergely Czoboly. Before joining us Gergely worked as anexpert at the International Taxation Department of the Ministry of Finance. In his previous job Gergely was the Hungarian delegate to the OECD’s Working Party on Aggressive Tax Planning, also participating at the negotiations of the BEPS and the ATAD directives.

From July, 2020 our capital markets & regulatory group will operate as an independent practice of Jalsovszky. The area of expertise continues to rely on our market-leading finance and banking group, however it will operate as a separate practice area. 

Our podcast series called 'We Make Sense of Hungary' have just aired. In our first episode, our guest is Dr. Dániel Karsai, an independent lawyer specialized in human rights and constitutional law. We discuss whether businesses should be concerned about the “state of danger” that was introduced in Hungary as a response to the Covid-19 crisis. We also explore why officers of the Hungarian army have appeared at some companies. Stay tuned for further episodes!

Legal500, one of the most prestigious publications that rates law firms around the world, has recently published its rankings for 2020. 

We were pleased to see that our Tax practice is still regarded as a market leader. And in 2020 our Real Estate practice was ranked close to the top, as were our M&A and our Banking & Finance practices. It was also gratifying to see that after a year of challenging and successful work, our litigation practice earned a place in the rankings.

Our colleagues are not lazy even in winter time. It is well known that we are sporty and also active in the winter. In mid-January, our ski-loving colleagues slipped to Austria and took the Nassfeld ski slopes, with skis and snowboards on their feet. In four days we skied a total of 114 km and laughed for countless minutes. JalsovSKI you were great, see you next year.

At the gala ceremony held at the end of November, Wolters Kluwer handed out again their annual awards to lawyers and legal teams. We are happy to announce that just like a year ago, our office won again the award of Tax Group of the Year Award. Receiving this prize is a real honour for us, as the panel considered innovation, customer focus, and professionalism as the most important factors to pick the winner in each category.

The prize was awarded to our submission entitled ‘Innovative tax structure for innovative businesses’, submitted by István Csővári and Anilla Gondi.

Our firm's commitment to the CEE region is reflected in the fact that we now publish articles and news on the CEE Legal Matters website. Our aim is to inform legal counsels working in the region about changes in the law that may have a bearing on doing business in and with Hungary.

Community, sport, active relaxation – these were the defining themes of our office sports weekend. This year, it was down to Lake Balaton, where one of our biggest challenges was simply staying upright on our stand-up paddle boards. Not as easy as it looks! But all four of us falling into the water at once was certainly an experience to remember!

We enjoyed the activity, and recommend it to anyone that fancies having fun and literally “chilling out” in a natural setting!

From January, 2019 our litigtaion team will operate as a seperate practice group. When forming this practice we relied on the routine and expertise gained through our market-leading tax litigation practice as well as on the experience and knowledge we have acquired in civil lawsuits conducted in the previous year. 

The International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD) a Netherlands-based, non-profit organisation, is an indispensable player of the international tax information flow: it collects and processes tax information from all over the world and distributes such information through different channels.

Last week Wolters Kluwer handed out its traditional legal awards where our office was crowned in the tax section. Receiving this prize is a real honour for us, due to the fact that this section generally draws the biggest competition among the participants. 

Chambers and Partners, one of the most widely recognised independent legal professional publications significantly improved our rankings in it’s 2018 – year edition.
